Just finished my morning workout…..whew!! This isolation and the ending of, “our life as we knew it”, can really take a toll on our physical AND mental health.

My newest habit is to change my motion to change my E-motion! When I was single, I joined a lot of aerobic classes at the gym I had a membership at and I was also in a hip-hop dance band as a singer. I was always exercising and dancing and then I gave my life to motherhood for 22, intense years, not that I would change a thing.

But things have changed, and although I now have a college student home again and a full time high-schooler here, I realized I need some deep and lasting motivation to keep my focus positive and my mind and body in shape! I started taking up aerobic dance and dancing again, in general. What a great, playful, new adventure!

Dancing increases flexibility (make sure you stretch first:), improves posture, increases core strength and is a natural mood lifter/ anxiety dissolver. When I turn on the loud music and start moving, those around me can’t seem to help but join in, which in turn, becomes a fun family activity!

Aroma therapeutic side note: all of the citrus essential oils are really helpful at this historical, uncertain time we have found our selves in. I have made a blend of a few drops of each; lemon, orange, lime, grapefruit and bergamot essential oils in a 2 ounce spray bottle of water and then mist in each room. They naturally invigorate and are intrinsically anti-viral, anti- bacterial and immune system supporters- perfect to help prevent the spread of any virus! This particular blend also has such a tropical aroma to it so it brings back happy thoughts from happier days at the sunny beach.

What essential oil do I recommend in the diffuser this time of year?
Lemon: Citrus limon!
From the Monoterpene family and so high in limonene (71.24%) , Lemon makes an excellent deodorizer and immune system stimulant!
It boasts anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-depressant, and anti-inflammatory- perfect for dark days of winter!
So spread some happy sunshine in your home, lift your spirits and your immune system!
On the safety side:  Citrus’ can be Phototoxic (may cause skin discoloration if exposed to UV rays, natural or artificial). Avoid sunlight for 12 hours after applying topically. May cause skin irritation, especially if the oil is past its “best by” date. Use in low dilution (1%) when applying to the skin, such as in bath or massage oils. Keep out of reach of children. Otherwise serve up large amounts of this wonderful fruit! I drink a few mugs of hot (fresh) lemon water first thing every morning. It has  cleansed my congested liver and it has kept my husband’s kidney stones completely dormant! It’s The Little Things…

This vase may look rather large in the picture, but it’s only a one-ounce cobalt bottle filled with tiny Bluets I picked out of the grass in my yard! I am presently reading Ann Voskamp’s book, One Thousand Gifts, and this definitely made my ongoing list of a thousand gifts God has given me!!

Carefully picking these little beauties and trimming them to fit in my little aromatherapy bottle delighted my soul. I presented them to my daughter Gabrielle as we were working at Honest Aromas yesterday, and her face erupted with joy at the fairy sized bouquet!

This is the bottom line in life: gratefulness=fully living. We have to slow down and smell the flowers. We have to stop and take it all in. And many times, we have to make ourselves see the good in our own lives. I am thankful I can read and I am thankful I can write. There are many people who cannot. I am thankful my olfactory system works and I can smell the oils I blend with. There are many people who cannot. I am thankful I can walk and bend and use scissors to cut flowers, and even get a well deserved pain in a muscle from overuse. Some people have no limbs. Gratefulness=fully living.

On an aromatherapy note, you do not have to smell an aroma to glean the benefits from essential oils. It is truly affecting your body at a chemical level as it works its way through your olfactory and circulatory system!

But for those of us who can enjoy the odor, it is delicious! I put drops of essential oil in everything, a small bottle of water to mist the rugs and rooms of my home (Lemon), my shampoo (Lavender and Rosemary), my face oil (Frankincense, Tea Tree and Lavender mixed in a carrier of course), etc. I love walking into my home (or driving in my essential oil-permeated car) and being uplifted and relaxed by the immune system-building oils that I breathe in!

It’s spring, there is new life popping up everywhere! We can have new life in ourselves as well. We do not have to stay the same. It’s the little things in life, cared about and cultivated and mixed with gratitude, that make life fully alive!

Sitting here this morning, feeling a little low and run down after the holiday. I made some tea and did some Yoga with Adriene She has a great set of videos for working out when you are not feeling well, check them out! We all need to give our bodies a rest from this busy, stressed filled world- especially at this time of year.

Feed your body with fresh citrus to boost your immune system and lighten your mood, drink some tea with raw honey, and take a little walk. Put a couple drops of of grapefruit, lemon and orange in your diffuser. Read scriptures that are related to healing, Mark 5:34 for instance, and meditate on it.

Lemonade!

It was a hot and balmy day in Pennsylvania! Our 11 year old entrepreneur set up his Lemonade stand during our neighborhood garage sale weekend. “Pink or Original?” he would ask. He was a welcomed oasis  for the thirsty shoppers!

Traumatic Stress

Lavandula-angustifolia-or-common-lavender We can all have stress. Just living in this modern world can produce a stress like humans have not experienced thus far. Cell Phones, Computers,  TV’s and News, jobs, terror…….all in our face 24/7.

But there are some situations in your life that can produce such a level of stress that you can not easily “file” and sort out in your brain. You may try, but find you have reoccurring dreams, flash backs or un explained panic. It is possible you are experiencing a form of Post Traumatic Stress.

I know I have tended to think of that only in terms of the military. But there have been 2 times in my life that I have been diagnosed with it and I have had a “seemingly” normal- non military life!

You may have witnessed/ or have been involved in a bad accident. You may have been a care giver for a sick child or elderly person for an extended period of time. You may have gone through a significant relationship issue- separation, divorce, addiction, etc. Or maybe have been the victim of some kind of abuse.

There are three main classes of PTSD symptoms (source):

  1. Re-experiencing: intrusive memories, sleep disturbance, dissociation, intense anger or anxiety at memory
  2. Avoidance: avoidance, detachment, estrangement, numbing, “shutting down”
  3. Hyperarousal: nightmares, irritability, sleep disturbance, anger, aggression, impulsivity, panic attacks, exaggerated startle response

If you experience these symptoms you should take some care and time to think about where they may have originated. Definitely pray! “Be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” Romans 12:2 And seek out the help of a Licensed Therapist. Not all counselors are created equal! So get some feedback from others who have been there, and have received help and are able to move on with their lives.

I am currently using a blend to help with traumatic stress in my life. Lemon (uplifting) with Lavender (calming). I blend it into an inhaler and use as needed. You can apply this combination into a diffuser. You can also blend 3 drops of each into a carrier oil and apply…but do not do it on skin exposed to sun as lemon is photo toxic.
