Flu Season Solutions

Hello friends!

Autumn is just around the corner, which means, unfortunately, that flu season is around the corner too!

20150826_105445

Of course, as part of our commitment to holistic health here at Honest Aromas, we believe that you don’t have to always dread the onslaught of sickness that “flu season” brings. The changing of seasons can effect health, but by nurturing the immune system and living a healthy lifestyle all year round, you can minimize or eliminate the chance of getting sick!

Try natural solutions like our Sinus and Allergy Inhaler, which is great for treating respiratory symptoms on the go. Essential oils like grapefruit and sweet cypress help fight cold and flu symptoms while lifting the mood, which is important for overall health as well!

We carry a variety of oils great for boosting your immune system during the throes of flu season. Contact us to find the best fit for you! We also offer aromatherapy parties and demonstrations so you can share the goodness of aromatherapy with friends and family.

What questions can we answer for you today?

Not Just for Sneezing

Chances are, you use pepper daily to season your food.

Did you know, though, that black pepper (Piper nigrum) essential oil also has amazing health benefits?

It’s true! According to Pompeii Organics, black pepper is an amazing pain reliever! Like the related cayenne pepper, black pepper has a warming effect, making it effective for joint and muscle aches. We use it in our Athlete’s Blend for any kind of soreness. It stimulates blood flow and encourages circulation, taking away pain.

Apart from its pain relieving properties, black pepper also fights infection and inflammation. It reduces fever and clears respiratory passages.

Emotionally, Pepper can help reduce fear and motivate change, which pairs well with yesterday’s blog on doubts!!BlackPepper_15ml_USDA_WEB__56833.1456168736.215.215

Because this is a warming oil, you shouldn’t use black pepper in a bath or anything where you want a gentle, cooling effect. Mixing it with mint or citrus oils can help balance the warmth.

So you see, pepper isn’t just good to make you sneeze. 🙂

Interested in trying black pepper? Let us know! We usually stock a few bottles. We also have it as an ingredient in several products, so send us an email or visit us this week at the Oil City Farmer’s Market on Thursday! It is National Farmer’s Market Week! Come and support your local vendors:-)

Yarrow

Many essential oils come from what we would consider common plants or even weeds. Today’s oil is one of these. Meet yarrow (Achillea millefolium)!

Yarrow.jpg

Although this plant is common in many applications, the essential oil (our favorite comes from Pompeii Organics ) has some very helpful benefits.

yarrow oil.jpg

Yarrow is great for small wounds, because it relieves pain and stops bleeding. It’s also anti-inflammatory and rebuilds skin tissue.

Yarrow helps clear respiratory passages in the event of a cold or flu. It’s antispasmodic, which makes it great for muscles and coughs.

The essential oil is a lovely blue color and has a soft flowery scent. It’s a great oil to have around the house, as it’s helpful for a variety of uses while still being pretty cost-effective.

Don’t forget to come find us from 9am-4pm at the Oil City Farmer’s market in front of the library!

Spike Lavender

Earlier in the week we talked about the ever-popular Lavender essential oil (Lavendula angustifolia). We also mentioned another type of lavender, one many people confuse for the other. Lavendula latifolia, also known as Spike Lavender, contains much different properties than its more popular counterpart.

Spike Lavender

According to Pompeii Organics, spike lavender, unlike its calming cousin, is a stimulating oil. It awakens and alerts the mind, unlike angustifolia, which is a sedative.

Spike lavender contains camphor, which makes it perfect for respiratory ailments that accompany colds and the flu. Use it for sinus pain and congestion.

A word of caution, however: spike lavender is not safe for pregnant women to use, due to the presence of camphor. This is why it’s extremely important to know your oils, the proper type, dosage, and properties, so that you do not seriously injure yourself!

Have questions or concerns about essential oils? Stop by the Oil City Farmer’s Market in front of the Library from 9am,-4pm, or feel free to contact us in the way that best suits you. We look forward to hearing from you!

All About Spearmint

Hello all! Hope your week is going well!

Last week we shared our newest product: the Allegheny Woods collection. One of the ingredients in this special blend is Spearmint oil (Mentha spicata).

Spearmint is sweeter, cooler, and more mellow than its relative Peppermint (Mentha piperita). Our favorite brand comes from Pompeii Organics.

spearmint_15ml_usda_web__06839-1456147681-1280-1280

Spearmint is an excellent calming oil. It soothes the body and even aids with depression. You can use spearmint for colds and flu, as it fights infection and clears airways. It is also an effective anti-fungal agent and can help with digestion.

Spearmint is a gentler mint, which makes it great for more soothing applications. It offers the freshness of mint without the bite! That’s why we chose it for our Allegheny Woods blend.

Are you interested in trying this wonderful oil out for yourself? Shoot us an email (honestaromatherapy@gmail.com)! We work with our favorite company Pompeii Organics to bring you the best prices for the best quality oils.

Have you ever used spearmint before? Let us know what you think!

Eucalyptus

Hello folks! We hope you are having a great week before the Easter holiday.

Today we want to share an essential oil we’re not quite sure why we haven’t featured before: Eucalyptus!

euca glob

According to our favorite Pompeii Organics, Eucalyptus (globulus) is a powerhouse for sickness. Most people think of eucalyptus as good for a cough and cold, and this is correct; eucalyptus literally breaks down congestion and opens air passages!

Interestingly, however, there are several different kinds of eucalyptus. The globulus variety is excellent to fight the germs, viruses, and inflammation of colds and flus, while a variety like citriadora is better to fight fungus and repel insects. This is why it’s important to know what you’re buying and using!

Eucalyptus is a great oil to diffuse around the house. Use it to stave off illness and cool your airways! It can also be added to lotions, carrier oils, and soaps. Be sure to dilute it properly, however, for the best affect. Eucalyptus is strong and can be irritating if not used correctly. As always, feel free to contact us with any questions you may have!

Are you interested in trying this amazing oil? Take a look at Pompeii Organics, or call/email us to order for our special price. We’d love to share this great product with you!

Seasonal Allergies and Elderberries…

flu-shots-tall-new

One of our favorite people in the world makes a delicious syrup from elderberries and has a fast growing family company as well! Check out andilynnselderberries.com

Elderberries have been a major part of the health changes Andrea has made to her life and to her families as well. Several years ago she experienced symptoms of multiple sclerosis and as she was feeling worse by the day and spending more and more time getting tests, she decided to do some self tests as well! She discovered she was gluten intolerant and that was the primary culprit in the numbness and fatigue she was experiencing!!

This was her experience and it lead her on a fantastic journey and ultimately opening her own business to “share the health”!

Boost your immune system and support flu and allergy season with some delicious Elder Berry Syrup! Go to  andilynnselderberries.com to order some today!20150613_204834 (1)

Top O The Mornin’

20160303_132041.jpgTea! I am a Coffee Person, but I love a good cup black tea from time to time…especially Irish Breakfast and especially this time of year;-)

Black tea is fermented and oxidized which differentiates it from it’s green and white counter parts and which also gives it’s unique flavor. Although I have been taught that nothing too good comes from oxidized things…black tea does have a load of benefits!

According to organicfacts.net black tea can benefits range from lowering high cholesterol and blood pressure to supporting bad digestion, and poor circulation to name just a few!

Of course you can add some raw honey and lemon for some added health benefits. I like it that way when I feel a cold or the flu is going around, but usually I prefer mine with little coconut milk;-)

So if you are like me, and love your morning cup o’ jo….change it up from time to time and celebrate other flavors and health benefits. As the old Irish blessing goes; “May you always have tea beside the fire”…
