Now, doesn’t that sound like one of those fad remedies from the 19th century? Do you picture a round man in a bowler hat trying to sell you a glass bottle of alcohol-laced elixir?
Fortunately, today’s featured “health elixir” is nothing like the quack remedies of the Victorian era. It’s Kombucha, a natural fermented drink that has been used for thousands of years to boost the immune system and prevent sickness.
Kombucha is a fizzy drink that tastes slightly alcoholic due to its fermented nature, but is much safer to drink, even for kids! It is easily flavored with fruit or juices, making it versatile for a variety of tastes.
According to Food Renegade’s post on Kombucha, the Chinese called it “the immortal health elixir” because that’s pretty much what it is. Kombucha is a probiotic, which detoxes your body and encourages digestive health. It has been shown to fight cancer and protect joints from arthritis.
Unfortunately, if you go into any average health food store to buy Kombucha, you could be paying $4 or more for a bottle! The great news is that you can make it yourself for much cheaper! I just made my first batch and so far so good! I love it!
