Aromatherapy Tips!

oregano

Nothing is a silver bullet,  but every shift you make toward health supports your holistic big picture. Essential Oils and Aromatherapy are a wonderful and fun way to support all over health! Although essential oils have a fragrance, they are not fragrance oils. They have natural chemical components that support your emotions and your immune system and there is much scientific research to back that up!

Honest Aromas is all about using essential oils safely! Always use essential oils in a carrier for ultimate safety! A carrier is anything that you mix the essential oil into before application. In your diffuser, the carrier would be the water that you place the drops into. Diffusing is the safest method of using essential oils!

Other carriers that could be used are; Coconut oil, Jojoba oil, Hemp seed oil, Shea butter, Vitamin E, Epsom salt, sea salt, sugar, etc. The carrier puts a protective barrier between your skin, it can help with a fast or slow absorption rate and the carrier, many times, adds an extra therapeutic value!

Here is a great dilution rate rule of thumb:

Here is an easy recipe for you to try!

Calming lotion:

Blend 5-6 drops Lavendula angustifolia  into 1 ounce of an unscented lotion. Blend well with a glass mixer or baby spoon. Smooth on your hands, wrists, ankles and feet to de- stress your evening and support sleep. Enjoy!

We hope this has been a helpful tid-bit and we are always happy to help in any way we can! We are available for classes and presentations for your home or office. Shoot us an email anytime- we want to hear from you!

“O-O-O”

oregano

Hello everyone! Hannah here. Today’s post is about the essential oil that scarred me for life: Oregano (Origanum vulgare).

I say this tongue in cheek, but it’s a little true too. When my siblings and I were little, Mom (Julia), in an effort to do the best for our health, would put oil of oregano in our orange juice, and then proceed to pretend it was normal.

Little six-year-old me looked at the oily film over the surface of my juice and refused to drink it. I knew what she’d done, and I knew that oily, pizza-smelling orange juice wasn’t normal.

But oregano’s health benefits overruled my palate, and Mom made me drink the pungent juice every morning. I grew to hate oil of oregano so much that I hated to even hear the name. I insisted that everyone refer to it as “o-o-o” in my presence.

One day I gagged while trying to force my orange juice down. After that Mom never made me drink it again, and my thought was “Wow, I should’ve started gagging a lot sooner!” I was a devious little thing.

Now we joke about it with Mom, who is a little embarrassed that she made her children take such a strong oil internally! Knowing what she does now, she does not recommend ingesting oils, with a small exception (which I’ll get to later).

Humorous childhood stories aside, there are many health benefits to oregano. According to Pompeii Organics, oregano is a disinfectant, antiviral and antibacterial, making it helpful for wounds.

It’s also an effective pain reliever, warming and numbing to the skin. It’s great to stimulate the digestive system and boost the immune system.

This last property is why Mom sneaked oregano into our orange juice all those years ago; in her defense, we never got sick! Of course, given the chance to do it again, she’d go about it differently.

Ingestion of essential oils can be extremely dangerous for children. Many in the field of aromatherapy advise against it for adults, too, and here is where Mom, as an aromatherapist, will make a small exception. She’s found that for herself, ingesting a few drops of oregano essential oil in a capsule can totally eradicate the first signs of cold or flu. Any time sickness is going around and she starts to feel off, she takes a capsule and is back to normal in no time.

Of course, it’s important to do your research and find what works best for you. If you are sensitive or have an allergy to oregano, this will most likely not work! This is where a consultation with an aromatherapist (I know a great one) can help: she can get an overview of your health and tailor a remedy to fit your particular needs.

Have you ever tried “o-o-o”? Do you have ever tried it in orange juice? (don’t, it’s disgusting 🙂 ) Happy weekend to you all!

Message In A Bottle

bottle

The infamous, Message In a Bottle, has been used through the centuries to write SOS alarms, send love messages and let oceanographers create pictures of the patterns of water circulation in the seas! The most recent bottle being recovered in the North Sea  after 98 years and it’s message read;

“Please state where and when this card was found, and then put it in the nearest Post Office, you will be informed in reply where and when it was set adrift. Our object is to find out the direction of the deep currents of the North Sea.”

Not very helpful…or romantic!!!

Well, you can create your own message in a bottle that will have instantaneous results!! What am I talking about, you ask?! When a few drops of essential oils are added to this cork diffuser bottle, the chemical components of the essential oil(s) send messages through your olfactory system to the cranial nerves and then relay that data to the brain! Voila! Message sent, and desired affect underway!

Inhalation is the fastest and safest method of using your essential oils and receiving the therapeutic effect. We have these adorable bottle necklaces ready and available for only $4.99 to start your next health adventure!

I like to put Marjoram or Bergamot in mine, to help keep calm and carry on;-)But there are many other options to choose from for your favorite “energizing” or “de-stressing” blend, and we can help you with that too! Shoot us an email to get your Message in A Bottle and keep your well being on course- we want to hear from you today!

CHEMISTRY & SAFETY
CHEMISTRY: Overall, the main chemical family in Juniper Berry is Monoterpenes, meaning the essential oil consists of smaller molecules which will absorb faster into the skin. It also means that it is a less stable oil with a shorter shelf life. Store Juniper Berry oil in a cool dark place and in a container with little air. The most prominent monoterpene in Juniper Berry is alpha-pinene, a molecule responsible for actions such as the following: anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antifungal, antispasmodic, antiviral, and the prevention of bone loss. Alpha-pinene is followed by Myrcene (a monoterpene with analgesic properties). Terpinen-4-ol and alpha terpineol are also part of Juniper Berry’s chemistry and contribute to the slight terpentine note.

SAFETY
: FOR EXTERNAL USE ONLY. Keep out of reach of children. Avoid use near eyes or mucous membranes. Always dilute before applying to the skin and use within the “Best By” date. UTI’s and Essential Oils:-)

blank label1

I have a lot of people, when I am at festivals, talk to me about the help they receive from natural products! They’re eyes have been opened to these new methods that they have not considered before and a lot of it does come from multi- level network Essential Oil Companies home parties! Now, there are things that I do not agree with that are being taught, and I think there is a lack of personal education on the subject matter, but the fact that people are starting to see that they hold a large measure of their own health in their hands is a good thing!

I told you last week I was starting to get sick….well it went full tilt! Then, out of  no where it seemed, I started having symptoms of a UTI!! I went to Sustainable Baby Steps and read the great article that I have highlighted above. I immediately went to kitchen took 4 cranberry pills,a Kyo- Dopholis capsule, drank a glass of water and took a bath made with mineral salt, Lavender and Juniper Berry. Finished with another glass of water, which I continued to drink. The next time I went to the bathroom, there was NO STABBING PAIN!! Amazing! Thankful!!

I have used essential oils for many of my female issues, with quick and healthy results. We blogged about some of these in For The Ladies at Honest Aromas.

Read the enclosed article and take a baby step of health, especially during this cold and flu season! We are right here with you! How can we help with your health goals?

Bloom Where You’re Planted:0)

20160922_080045

As I was taking a walk this morning, I found this little flower growing in a crack of an abandoned runway. It immediately reminded me to “Bloom Where You’re Planted”!

As this little flower has found itself (by no fault of it’s own- I might add) trying to grow amidst hard, stony ground with out all the proper nutrients or enough shade or water, I can feel that way too some times. We can even put ourselves in those positions through choices we have made.

None the less, let us forget what is behind and press forward toward the prize. Let us dig our convictions and commitments down deep and stay firmly planted not growing weary so that we will produce a harvest (or a flower;-).

The fruit comes from the commitment and the perseverance of staying -not manufacturing fruit! Stay the course!

This flower’s extreme perseverance in the hot sun all summer reminds me of Vetiver!! It is an Essential Oil that has many excellent properties including being used as a treatment for sun stroke and dehydration! It is also helpful for healing wounds and scars, it is anti-inflammatory and anti -septic as well as boosts the immune system!

We want to encourage you today in your life’s journey and give you inspiration in your calling and goals! Is there a custom blend that could support your routine? Give us a call today:-)

Testimonials: Jane’s Story

Hello everyone!

In the past week we’ve been sharing some client testimonies. We want to continue that today with the story of one of our Farmer’s Market clients: “Jane”.

bottleJane comes to the Farmer’s Market every week and orders a little bottle necklace of a bergamot and clary sage blend. She finds it extremely useful for anxiety.

One day at home Jane used an older bottle of lemongrass essential oil, one she had gotten long ago from another seller. The oil seriously irritated her skin and caused a bad reaction! Due to the good professional relationship we’d gotten to form with Jane, she felt comfortable coming to us and looking into what may have caused the problem.

I was able to tell Jane a little about essential oil safety—Lemongrass, as we’ve written before, can be very irritating to the skin. It can also go bad over time, something that many essential oil companies don’t tell you! Because she’d had such a bad reaction, I advised Jane to avoid lemongrass for a while, to let the body recover and build up strength again. Your immune system can have an allergic-type reaction to essential oils if the quality is not good or if they are used improperly.

Jane is a loyal customer, one we’re happy to get to know. She loves coming to us with her essential oil questions. She says she trusts our knowledge and has learned a lot about the power of essential oils, power which can be harmful and helpful!
