What Is Your Drug Of Choice?

I am so thankful, on this fall morning, for the peace and freedom that I am experiencing right now! I have been writing a book and have a deadline for the end of December. It is my story of recovering from an addictive, life altering event.

I have written my journey, in part, on this forum for over three years now. But in the wake of this particular event of my life, I took months off of life, to spend time with The Father, Son and Holy Spirit.  I needed to emotionally heal and I am grateful to my family that I was able to do that. My wish and prayer is that every person could have that space of time to recover from what ever trauma they have experienced and I would love to be a facilitator of that in the future, in a greater way than I am presently.

During that time I wrote out scriptures, some quite artistically, and literally plastered my home with them. They would be in front of my face and I would read them, speak them and meditate on them all day. Yesterday, I had the privilege of reacquainting with a woman who had been at my home during the time of my renewal.  She said she will never forget seeing  those scriptures attached to my walls. She said that she used the bathroom while she was at my home and spent time just reading the verses that were attached to the mirror in there. She too had been entangled in something and God was using the means of renewing my mind, to shed light into her darkness as well. This is the ultimate power that is greater than any other pull of the world, but we have to apprehend it.

Our mind is a magnificent created universe with tremendous pathways that can be re directed. I had built unhealthy ruts in my mind through addictive behaviors and they needed to be rewired and healed.

Romans 12:2  says; Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind.

I had conformed to the pattern of the world and it was downright painful to pull out all of that construction and rebuild, but God had encouraged me on with every Word that He spoke through His Word to me. Jesus became very real and tangible. During that time He pulled down the strongholds of caring what others thought about me, he delivered me from depression and He showed me, so intimately, who I am in Him.

Another scripture that I wrote down in addition to Romans 12:2, was 1 Peter 1:13.

Gird up the loins of your mind, be sober and rest your hope fully upon the grace that is to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.

This passage speaks of doing what ever it takes to focus our thoughts on those things that allow us to serve God successfully, all the while eliminating any thoughts that would trip us up. The Hebrew idea was, to pull up long robes and tie them around the waist so that quick and freeing movement could be made.

Are there things that are tripping you up? Do you feel as if you can never get free from the things that bind you and set you back? Do you have dark corners of your heart that you hide from everyone in the world? I did too. God knows, He sees, and His response is always love. No one loves or cares about you more than Him. His plan is for you to reflect His glory and be His light to others in the darkness of the world. Jesus offers Himself to you right now. He is the way, the truth and the life. I did not only say that, He said that about Himself. (John 14:6) Whoever follows Him will not walk in darkness but have the light of life. (John 8:12) It is the most freeing, spiritual and adventurous journey you can ever take.

He cares about your life, your soul, your spirit  and your eternity and so do I.  He is here for you right this minute, again, no matter how many times you have tried and failed. Ask Him to forgive you and renew your mind and set all of your hope on His grace to you. Make Him your obsession and aim. I am right here with you walking this path of wholeness and I am so thankful for the opportunity.

Arthritis

20170904_140314

I was asked to speak at our local Arthritis support group! The facilitator was telling me that the group has embraced finding alternative methods of treatment for their arthritis, I think that is fantastic!

Did you know that there are over 100 forms of arthritis? And aside from the pain of it, there are a host of other issues most people who have arthritis deal with. Depression and insomnia and grief are just a few.

Medicinenet.com  wrote a helpful article on the subject and here is a bit of what they say about arthritis symptoms;

Arthritis Symptoms

Joint pain can be caused by injury affecting any of the ligaments, bursae, or tendons surrounding the joint. Injury can also affect the ligaments, cartilage, and bones within the joint. Pain is also a feature of joint inflammation (arthritis, such as rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis) and infection, and extremely rarely it can be a cause of cancer of the joint.

Symptoms and signs associated with joint pain can include

  • joint redness,
  • joint swelling,
  • joint tenderness,
  • joint warmth,
  • limping,
  • locking of the joint,
  • loss of range of motion of the joint,
  • stiffness,
  • weakness.

There is good news! Of course there is no silver bullet, but there are a lot of life style adjustments that can be made to help support the different facets of this debilitating disease and aromatherapy can definitely help.

There is the matter of the pain. Honest Aromas has created a blend that has been very helpful to people who deal with arthritis. We have picked some “heavy hitters” as far as essential oils go, such as; Clove (which is diluted well as it can be irritating to skin because of it’s high Phenol content)It is pain relieving and warming to sore joints and muscles. Birch, Helps support the uncomfortable parts of getting older such as tired limbs and joints. and Cinnamon leaf (Not Cinnamon Bark which irritates the skin);Cinnamon Leaf is numbing, warming, and anti-infectious. . They are extremely potent and have long lasting analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects. We have blended those into an Arnica infused oil for added muscle- pain relief and they all are blended in an easily absorbable unscented lotion. We have many customers who benefit from this particular blend and it is one of our most popular. (Essential Oil information taken from Pompeii Organics and Eden’s Gardens.)

Arthritis sufferers, like we said, deal with a myriad of other symptoms such as, insomnia. Essential oils like Lavender and Roman Chamomile can be very supportive in the relaxation of the nervous system and we make blends for this issue as well.

Stress, anger, and grief are all very real manifestations of arthritis. Bergamot can be a very helpful essential oil for it’s mood lifting and calming properties.

Diet changes have also shown significant help to cut down in inflammation that occurs with arthritis and the Keto Diet has been helping a lot of people, including 2 friends of mine, by reducing inflammation and pain and getting them back into the daily routines they nearly lost.

Arthritis can be a life-altering issue and I have seen the effects of it first hand after taking care of my mother-in-law, who had RA, for four years. The loss of mobility was hopeless for her. She pushed herself to get into the shower to get some warm water on her joints and she did some arthritis pool classes that would help her mobility and depression- but it wasn’t easy. I noticed it was very easy for her to become isolated and that of course is the worse thing for any of us to do. I also noticed that there were some medications that seemed to help her and some that seemed to make matters worse. I encourage you to be aware of your body and how you are feeling, and make the best choices you can to make your life it’s fullest. There is a lot of support out there, like this local group I am going to speak at. There are others who understand what you are dealing with and who have been helped by alternative methods that your physician is unaware of. Gather information, seek help from more than one source, you have a lot of life to live and give! We want to encourage you on your journey<3

What Are You Thinking?

Thinking: we all do it. Some of us are better at hiding it than others, but no matter who you are, the things you think about will affect all of your life choices. We have amazing minds, and I don’t think we can be reminded enough of the benefits of renewing our minds.

I have written a lot of blog posts on this idea over the last year. The following is what I wrote one morning on my Facebook page. Although the focus is on shame, it ultimately goes back to what we think about ourselves:

According to the book Unashamed by Christine Caine, shame-based thinking says, ” I am not ________ enough” (Thin enough, smart enough, victorious enough, successful enough, Christian enough, a good enough parent, a good enough spouse, etc.). But those are constant lies that many of us have believed. It isn’t what God says about us. It isn’t the truth. In Genesis 2:25, “Adam and his wife were naked and they knew no shame.” That was what God created. Jesus took shame on the cross, and His Blood will wash away all of our shame if we let Him work in our lives. Run to Him! He ALWAYS wants to bring wholeness and healing to His children no matter what you have done or where you have been. He loves you so much that He died on a cross for your sin. You ( and I ) are no shock to Him! If you walk around continually defeated, feeling like you are missing the mark, remind yourself of what He says about you. You are completely forgiven, fully pleasing, totally accepted, and complete in Him! He is the one you are living for, so His approval is the only one that matters. He is love. Let Him free you of your shame so you can be the person He created you to be. ❤

Do you walk around continually defeated? Do you question everything about yourself and all the decisions you make? Consider taking time to question what lies you are believing about yourself. It cannot happen overnight, and it cannot happen when you are rushed. But as you take quiet time and reflection and begin to ask yourself hard questions, you can be free from these untruths that have been holding you back in life.

Here are five essential oils that can help clear the mind as well:

  • Rosemary
  • Basil
  • Juniper Berry
  • Peppermint
  • Sage or Clary Sage

As an aromatherapist, I regularly use and carry all five. I am here on this journey with you! You are not alone and you are loved!

Are you interested in trying these five mind-balancing oils? Have you experienced the power of renewing your mind and thought patterns? We want to hear from you today!

Moving Forward

Hello all! We hope your week is going well.

It can be hard to move forward sometimes; you get in a rut and find yourself stuck in the same feelings or situations that do nothing but bring you down. It’s hard to break out of that cycle, to accept God’s grace and move forward into a healthier, more joyful lifestyle!

We’ve shared about Rose Absolute (Rose damascena) before, and we love how it doesn’t just benefit the body (especially the skin) but the mind. It lifts your mood and helps encourage a softer heart, both helpful things for times when you are trying to move forward!

Interested in trying this beautiful oil? Let us know! We’d love to talk to you today!

Clary Sage

Hello everyone! Sorry we’ve been a little behind on blogging this week. It’s the crazy end of summer, and the days get away from us before we know it!

We’ve been busy planning upcoming festivals in the fall, as well as kicking around ideas for the future of Honest Aromas. It’s always fun to dream and plan, isn’t it?

One essential oil we’ve mentioned before, Clary Sage (Salvia sclarea), is a good one as you look to the future. According to Pompeii Organics, clary sage (which is different than other sages!) helps lift the mood and balance the hormones, a helpful thing when you’re trying to make plans! cs

Clary sage reduces tension in the muscles. It is calming, similar to Lavender Angustifolia, and it’s great for high blood pressure.

Due to its hormone-regulating properties, women often use clary sage to balance out the symptoms of menopause. In general, clary sage stimulates the menstrual cycle, due to an estrogen-mimicking molecule in its chemical makeup. This can make it helpful for menopause or period cramps, but that also means it can increase period bleeding or adversely affect pregnancy. Use with caution and with the direction of a trained aromatherapist (one specifically comes to mind! 🙂 ).

Remember, we will be at the Oil City Farmer’s Market from 9am-4pm today, as long as the weather’s good, so check in to see what’s new and to ask any questions you may have! We love meeting new friends and sharing the wonderful world of aromatherapy with you!

Angelic Angelica

Today’s featured oil is one of the newest at Pompeii Organics (our favorite essential oil company). Meet Angelica archangelica!

Angelica Root

True to it’s name, Angelica Root is a truly “heavenly” oil! It’s amazing for the immune system as a whole, fighting infection, fungus, viruses, and inflammation. It soothes pain and spastic muscles.

Because of all these properties, Angelica Root also strengthens the respiratory, digestive, lymphatic and nervous systems. It’s recommended for comforting symptoms of depression and sadness and for uplifting the mind and body.

Understandably, this oil is a little higher priced than most others, but the value can’t be beat! When used with care, it can last a long time. Diffuse into the air or mix with a carrier oil for topical use. A word of caution, however: Angelica Root is phototoxic (reacting with sunlight). It can burn and irritate the skin if exposed to sunlight before at least 12 hours have elapsed. Use caution and consult with a certified aromatherapist if you have any questions!

Don’t forget! We’ll be at the Oil City Farmer’s Market in front of the library from 9am to 4 pm today—as long as the weather cooperates. We hope to see you there!

Throwback: Roses are Red

Last year we shared a post on Rose Absolute essential oil. This is one of our favorite oils here at Honest Aromas, and we wanted to spread the love!

Remember we’ll be at the Oil City Farmer’s Market from 9-4, weather permitting. Hope to see you there!

For centuries the rose has been associated with love and “happy thoughts”. They are popular in gardens, at weddings, and as gifts, probably more popular than any other flower.

Though this might seem more like a fashion or cultural fancy, the reality is that rose (absolute) oil actually has a wonderful affect on health. Not only is it refreshing, invigorating, and good for skin, it is also good for a variety of deeper physical and emotional needs.

Rose is anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal, and great for helping the skin heal. It’s also a natural antidepressant, helpful for calming strong emotions like anger and grief, soothing the heart and renewing good feelings.

Because it’s good for the skin, rose oil can be added to water and sprayed all over the body for a refreshing, uplifting, and simple treatment. It can also be added to oil blends for massage. I love to spray rose water around my room and to freshen up after a long day. It brightens the mood and cleanses the skin!

With all this in mind, isn’t it interesting how roses have been a symbol of love and happiness throughout the ages? Somehow before the scientific effects were known, people gravitated toward the flowers as a source of happiness, comfort, and health. How much more can we take advantage of these wonderful properties today!

Have you ever used rose oil? How did it affect you? What do you think of rose’s ability to positively affect mental health? Let us know in the comments below!
