All About Spearmint

Hello all! Hope your week is going well!

Last week we shared our newest product: the Allegheny Woods collection. One of the ingredients in this special blend is Spearmint oil (Mentha spicata).

Spearmint is sweeter, cooler, and more mellow than its relative Peppermint (Mentha piperita). Our favorite brand comes from Pompeii Organics.

Spearmint is an excellent calming oil. It soothes the body and even aids with depression. You can use spearmint for colds and flu, as it fights infection and clears airways. It is also an effective anti-fungal agent and can help with digestion.

Spearmint is a gentler mint, which makes it great for more soothing applications. It offers the freshness of mint without the bite! That’s why we chose it for our Allegheny Woods blend.

Are you interested in trying this wonderful oil out for yourself? Shoot us an email (honestaromatherapy@gmail.com)! We work with our favorite company Pompeii Organics to bring you the best prices for the best quality oils.

Have you ever used spearmint before? Let us know what you think!

Top O The Mornin’

20160303_132041.jpgTea! I am a Coffee Person, but I love a good cup black tea from time to time…especially Irish Breakfast and especially this time of year;-)

Black tea is fermented and oxidized which differentiates it from it’s green and white counter parts and which also gives it’s unique flavor. Although I have been taught that nothing too good comes from oxidized things…black tea does have a load of benefits!

According to organicfacts.net black tea can benefits range from lowering high cholesterol and blood pressure to supporting bad digestion, and poor circulation to name just a few!

Of course you can add some raw honey and lemon for some added health benefits. I like it that way when I feel a cold or the flu is going around, but usually I prefer mine with little coconut milk;-)

So if you are like me, and love your morning cup o’ jo….change it up from time to time and celebrate other flavors and health benefits. As the old Irish blessing goes; “May you always have tea beside the fire”…

Battling the Flu

Hello everyone! I hope your week is going well so far. It’s the first day of March, which means Spring is on its way! We’ve made a few “spring cleaning” changes to our site, as you may have noticed, and we have a few in progress behind the scenes.

We’ve also come across a few cases of the flu here at Honest Aromas in the past week. As I shared last week, my son Dorian had to stay home from school for a few days. One of his teachers also came down with flu-like symptoms, as well as Hannah, who nursed a bad cold over the weekend. It seems like every time the seasons change, there’s a new round of illness. Sometimes this isn’t always related to overall health (although that certainly is a factor), but extra stress and busyness can play a part as well. There’s so much value in pacing yourself and resting!

Some of our own creations are also incredibly helpful when it comes to battling the flu. I sent our Tea Tree Gargle and Allergy and Congestion Rub to Dorian’s teacher, and Hannah also used these powerhouse products. They work great to kill germs, clear respiratory passages, and heal what’s left behind!

Hannah also diffused different combinations of Peppermint, German Chamomile, and Lavender in her new diffuser. The Peppermint was great for the daytime – because it’s a menthol, it’s amazing for air passages – while the Lavender and Chamomile were soothing and healing at night.

So there are just a few ways to fight that nagging flu! We hope you are having a healthy end of winter and would love to help you achieve that goal! Send us an email or give us a call if you have any questions. We want to hear from you!

Sweet Cypress

Hello all! Hope your week is going well!

Today I want to take a look at an oil I love to use in my proprietary blends: Cypress!

According to Pompeii Organics, cypress has strong astringent and diuretic properties. This makes it useful for skin issues, especially puffiness, swelling, oily skin, and varicose veins.

Cypress can also help with colds and flu. It decongests, fights inflammation, and soothes muscle spasms.

People have used cypress for restless leg syndrome, cramps, and swollen feet. It’s great to calm your muscles and skin!

Frankincense

Hey everyone!

Before Wednesday is over we’d like to share an ancient and amazing oil with you: Frankincense!

We’ve covered myrrh on the blog before, but never its famous partner, frankincense, which has also been used for thousands of years. Frankincense’s scent is earthy and spicy, like well, incense.

Of course, frankincense (Boswellia carteri) essential oil is not just a pretty smell; it has wonderful healing properties as well! (Source)

Frankincense fights pain and inflammation. It helps regenerate skin cells, making it great for scars. With its mucous-ridding and bacteria-killing properties, it’s helpful for treating colds and clearing respiratory passages. It also strengthens the immune system.

Interested in trying this ancient oil? Shoot us an email or give us a call. We know you’ll love it as much as we do!

Not Christmas Yet

Don’t you hate how Christmas pops up in stores before its proper time? Us too, but we can’t resist telling you about a very Christmassy oil: Scotch Pine (Pinus sylvestrus)!

Pine isn’t just a nice smell at Christmas; it’s also an amazing health and cleaning ingredient. According to Pompeii Organics, pine helps decongest and soothe respirator passages, making it great for cold and flu season. It is very effective as a steam inhalation to clean out sinuses and kill germs!

Pine is a warming oil, meaning it helps with stiff and sore muscles and joints by increasing circulation. It fights inflammation and spasms.

Pine essential oil is also used in green cleaners. Visit Pompeii to find a recipe!

Thank you do everyone who supported us at the Zelienople Harmony Country Fall Festival! We had a lot of fun and loved connected with you all.

Interested in trying pine? Let us know by email or give us a call. You can order through us and save money! You don’t need to wait for Christmas to try it 🙂

Tea Tree and Throats

Hello and thank you to everyone who came to support us this weekend! We had a great time connecting and sharing and doing what we love!

This weekend we’ll be at the Zelienople Harmony Country Fall Festival on Saturday and Sunday. If you live in the greater Pittsburgh area, please come see us!

Today I want to highlight the active ingredient in our very effective tea tree gargle – Australian Tea Tree (Melaleuca alternifolia) of course! We’ve never looked in depth at this amazing oil on the blog before, so here goes!

According to Pompeii Organics, Tea Tree is awesome for illness because it strengthens the immune system and kills bacteria, viruses, and fungus. It’s used extensively for skin issues like poison ivy, yeast infections, and athlete’s foot.

If you’ve ever smelled tea tree oil, you know it’s very pungent. This makes it great to deodorize air and clean out blocked sinus and respiratory passages.

In our proprietary gargle, salt acts as a carrier for the oils. When dissolved in warm water and gargled, the tea tree can kill any germs and clear your airways! Hannah and I have both used it whenever we feel a cold or flu coming on, whether it be by sniffles, a cough, or sore throat. The gargle is amazingly effective!

You may have heard of Manuka, which is also known as tea tree, but native to New Zealand. Australian Tea Tree, the more common oil we are talking about today, is similar but has many different chemistry and properties. Both are amazing and versatile oils.

If you’re interested in trying our gargle, send us an email or visit us at the Harmony festival! If you’ve ever tried Tea Tree or Manuka, let us know!
