Seasonal Allergies and Elderberries…

One of our favorite people in the world makes a delicious syrup from elderberries and has a fast growing family company as well! Check out andilynnselderberries.com

Elderberries have been a major part of the health changes Andrea has made to her life and to her families as well. Several years ago she experienced symptoms of multiple sclerosis and as she was feeling worse by the day and spending more and more time getting tests, she decided to do some self tests as well! She discovered she was gluten intolerant and that was the primary culprit in the numbness and fatigue she was experiencing!!

This was her experience and it lead her on a fantastic journey and ultimately opening her own business to “share the health”!

Boost your immune system and support flu and allergy season with some delicious Elder Berry Syrup! Go to  andilynnselderberries.com to order some today!20150613_204834 (1)

Sinuses and Laurel Leaf

Happy first day of Autumn everyone!

Today I want to highlight another product we make, as well as an active ingredient in it. Another one of our newest products is our Sinus and Allergy Inhaler.

Like our Migraine Inhaler, this one is great for taking some aromatherapy with you in your busy life! It’s super effective for any kind of sinus blockage or allergy symptoms.

One of the active ingredients in the Sinus and Allergy Inhaler is Laurel Leaf (Laurus nobilis) essential oil. According to Pompeii Organics, laurel leaf fights pain and infection and calms spasms, decongests and reduces fever, making it perfect for use in allergy symptoms and colds.

Laurel leaf has a strong aroma sort of like eucalyptus, but with a spicier note to it. It complements the other oils in our inhaler perfectly!

Interested in trying our new product? With Autumn here, cold and flu season is upon us. Avoid taxing your body with the harsh chemicals and toxins in allergy and cold medicines that only treat symptoms! Our Sinus and Allergy Inhaler is worth a try!

Have you ever used laurel leaf? Do you get seasonal allergies? Would you try our inhaler? We want to hear from you!

For the Ladies

Hello everyone! I hope your week is going well and you are enjoying the last few days of summertime!

Today I want to get a little up close and personal – well, more than a little. Today’s post will be focused more on you ladies, although you gentlemen are more than welcome to stick around. 🙂

In the past few weeks I have been formulated an all-natural douche for ladies who deal with irritation. Most of the similar preparations you find in the store are loaded with chemicals and perfumes! And for an… ahem, already sensitive area that relies on a highly delicate balance of good bacteria to stay healthy, these products can do more harm than good!

In addition to hygiene items being filled with irritating ingredients, many barrier-type contraceptives are too. A close friend of mine used a spermicide gel that gave her a severe reaction after only one week of use! During that week she noticed a bad smell and some lightheadedness from time to time, but she thought nothing of it. Then finally her body couldn’t take it anymore, and it reacted.

For an entire week she suffered from nausea, vomiting, dizziness, fever, and chills. After several months her body is still purging! Take note that this is a fairly common product she used – I assume that many women deal with the same issues!

How sad it is that all these yucky chemicals are considered normal and even helpful to put not just on our skin but literally in us! How odd that we wouldn’t think of ingesting a vaginal douche, deodorant, or contraceptive gel, but we are for some reason okay with putting them in one of the most sensitive areas of our bodies!

But the good news is you don’t need to do all that! So many wholesome and helpful remedies exist in nature that are just as effective – if not more – and without the synthetic drawbacks!

My douche formula includes manuka, German chamomile, and lavender (angustifolia) essential oils, which are all very gentle and skin-nourishing, perfect for a pleasant and gentle clean. I use it myself and it has been so helpful. Within 24 hours of use it completely improved the irritation I had!

If you are interested in this product or a custom one tailored to your particular needs, please let me know! I so want to help everyone – especially my fellow ladies 🙂 – achieve pure and true health that isn’t reliant on or adulterated by synthetic chemicals.

Have you ever had a severe reaction like the one my friend had? What did you learn from it? We want to hear from you!

Pass the Pecorino

Happy Tuesday folks! It’s Hannah here again, and today we’ll be talking about dairy allergies! (Fun! ;))

As an infant, I suffered from ear infections that led my mom (Julia) to find that I had a dairy allergy. As a child, I ate a dairy-free diet that included soy yogurt, Rice Dream ice cream, and this culinary masterpiece:

Pecorino Romano is a Parmesan-like cheese made from sheep’s milk, and was a staple for me growing up. As a five-year-old, I was more likely to ask for a slice of this than for a slice of American cheese. To this day it’s still my favorite!

I have mostly grown out of my dairy allergy, but it resurfaces from time to time when my immune system is weaker. I can always tell a reaction coming on by increased phlegm in my airways and a persistent cough that can often last for weeks.

The nature of allergies is such that your body might tolerate an allergenic substance for a while, but when you’ve overtaxed your system too much, your body will have a giant reaction in an effort to purge what it mistakenly sees as a harmful substance. This is what I experience with my cough, and what others may experience with hives or swelling.

This kind of reaction can also happen with essential oils if your body is allergic or sensitive to an herb. Because essential oils are highly concentrated, the buildup of the substance your body believes is harmful can create a serious reaction. That’s why it’s important to be safe and to know what you are doing when you use EO’s!

The best way to treat food allergies is to completely eliminate suspicious foods from your diet for at least five days, then to add them back in one by one, monitoring your reaction as you reintroduce each one. We also carry an allergy and congestion rub with cedarwood, lemon, and ginger essential oils and a pink himalayan salt gargle with tea tree oil for acute respiratory issues caused by colds and allergies.

It’s important to know your body and its limits! A sign of allergy or sensitivity in you might be different for someone else, and what helps someone else may not be helpful for you. Learn as much as you can (we are always here to help!) so that you can enjoy the best health possible!

Have you ever had an allergy? Ever tried pecorino romano? What works for you? What doesn’t?

Isn’t this a funny name? Manuka (Leptospermum scoparium) is one of the newest in our roster of oils. It comes from a beautiful plant native to New Zealand, where the Maori people have used it as a remedy for centuries! Our information on Manuka comes from Pompeii Organics and Aromatics International.

Manuka is amazing for skin issues. It combats acne, fungus, poison ivy, eczema, and psoriasis. It is antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and cicatrisant (your word of the day! It means skin healing/regenerating 🙂 )

Not only is the herb effective for skin, it’s also wonderful for colds and flu due to its antiviral and decongestant properties. It helps the body get rid of extra mucous and is also sedative, making it helpful for calmness and sleep.

One of the most interesting things about Manuka is that it actually fights allergies. It’s antihistamine properties combat allergic reactions, especially for insect bites or stings.

Manuka is not just used as an essential oil. Tea is one of the oldest ways the herb was used, leading to its nickname as the “New Zealand tea tree” (unrelated to Australian tea tree). Manuka honey has also been an effective remedy (and delicious food!).

Interested in getting some Manuka for yourself? Drop us an email, call, or come by the Oil City Farmer’s Market on Monday or next Thursday! We just got in a small shipment of Manuka and we are always refilling our stock!

What’s your favorite property of Manuka? Have you ever heard of it? What would you use it for?

Essential Oil Safety: Less is More!

Less is More

Let’s say you’re allergic to peanuts (maybe you are). Say it’s a mild allergy – you experience some discomfort when you ingest peanuts, but it’s not life threatening, just a little tickle in your throat and some nausea that tell you you’re allergic to peanuts.

Let’s say that, even though you know you’re allergic, you sort of shrug it off because you can live with the symptoms. It’s not like your breathing is cut off or anything. So, from time to time you indulge. You eat peanut butter cups, pb&j sandwiches, and even the occasional bag of roasted salted peanuts you get at the corner store for a dollar. You feel the tickle in your throat and the little stomach ache but it’s really nothing. Peanuts are healthy, you reason, a good source of protein. All your favorite bloggers have tons of earthy crunchy recipes with peanut butter in them, so it can’t be that bad.

One night, you get a craving for a nice big peanut butter and jelly sandwich. You go the the kitchen, make it up, and take a bite. You eat half the sandwich before you realize your throat feels tight. Maybe it’s just the bread. You stop eating to get drink of water and realize that the room is spinning. You really can’t breathe. Your skin is covered in hives. You end up spending the night in the ER from a severe allergic reaction.

This scenario is a scary one, and it happens often. What most people don’t realize, however, is that this very same thing can happen with essential oils.

Yep, even something that has the ability to help and heal a myriad of health issues can also be the cause of issues if you’re not careful. Essential oils are highly concentrated, so a drop of oil goes a long way. Less is more.

What’s more, oils and oil blends may have components you are allergic to without realizing it. At first your body may not react but tolerates it. However, just like a peanut allergy, the buildup of what your body perceives as dangerous eventually puts it over the edge, and it reacts strongly in very dangerous ways.

This doesn’t just happen with allergies. Too much of a good thing can be detrimental to anyone. Take water: it makes up 70% of your system and yet you can still drown. Natural does not always mean healthy, and healthy does not always mean healthy all the time. It takes research and patience to determine what is best for your body at a given time.

If you use essential oils, remember that less is more. A single drop of oil can help your system without taxing it. Always dilute oils in a carrier oil before you put them on your skin. Practice caution, and you will see that using less with enable your body to heal itself without being overwhelmed. (You’ll also safe a lot more money!)

How do you like to be safe when you use oils?
