The Power of Your Thoughts

Happy Monday….or is it?!! It doesn’t really matter how we feel per say about the day, what matters is what you tell your grey matter to think! We have a lot to do with the out come of our attitude and it is not based on our circumstances.

Dr. Carolyn Leaf, A neuroscientist, has spent a life time studying the brain’s ability to grow and renew itself based on the thoughts we allow ourselves to think and the things we say! I have read a few of her books and watched her You Tube videos (with my autistic son), and she has a lot of compelling data.

Here are a few of her quotes;

  • “You cannot sit back and wait to be happy and healthy and have a great thought life; you have to make the choice to make this happen. …
  • “Frame your world with your words.” …
  • “If you realized how powerful your thoughts are, you would never think a negative thought.

According to her research, your brain will actually grow flourishing “trees”, new neurons/brain cells, or diseased “trees”, abnormal brain tissue, much depending on what we speak and the thoughts we allow ourselves to think! Many years ago, it was taught that you were born with a certain amount of neurons and that it was impossible to grow new ones and this research shows, that just simply isn’t true.

So, this morning, I woke up kind of grumpy! I made a choice when I went to the gym (which is great for adding Happy Hormones!), to reject my stinking thinking and be thankful! I even watched a You Tube video on thankfulness by Malcom Smith. Of course Jesus said; “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” That is a scripture that has motivated me the last few years and that is truth! And Romans 1:21 says; “Because although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts and their foolish hearts were darkened.” (Emphasis added.) I do not want to be dark, or futile in my thoughts, or be conformed to this world! I want to shine exactly how I was created to, with positive life energy beaming out of my eyeballs and out through the words I speak to myself and others! I struggle…I think you may too. Lets choose life changing words and be a positive reflection to all we meet today, especially those who are closest to us<3

Epsom Salt!

EpsomSaltGraphic2

I am always amazed how many people DO NOT know about the benefits of Epsom Salt! If I would go to my mother with any ailment, she would say; “go soak in Epsom Salt!”. It always seemed rather boring to me and even like a cop out!! But as I have studied and applied health to my own life, Epsom Salt has become a necessary staple in my home.

Epsom salt, named for a bitter saline spring at Epsom in Surrey, England, is not actually salt but a naturally occurring pure mineral compound of magnesium and sulfate.  As the chart shows above, it can reduce stress and all over inflammation! We used it every morning for a few years as a bath for our son who has Autism. It proved to relax him, and get that much needed Magnesium into his system.

Last night, our daughter who runs Cross Country at school, had significant inflammation in her ankle as well as a shin splint ;-( I made her a very warm, teetering on hot bath, of 2 Cups Epsom salt and 10 drops Helichrysum (which is the go-to oil for bruises) for her to soak in.  She came out about one half hour later saying that she felt “so good!” and she continued by icing the leg and ankle. This morning her ankle had completely returned to normal size, as it reduced inflammation with this protocol and resting through the night.

This week I also spoke at an Arthritis Support group and I, again, was amazed to find the participants who had never tried Epsom salt in their repertoire ! It is an inexpensive alternative many times providing more relief, with no side effects, than pain medication ( of course consult with your own Physician if you are on a specific protocol.)

So, I couldn’t let the week go by with out reminding you how great this supplement is and encourage or remind you to try it for what ever ails you! Epsom salt is also The Perfect Carrier for your favorite Essential Oils. Rule of thumb, 1 ounce of Epsom salt to 4-5 drops of Essential Oil. Make sure your Essential oil is not skin irritating if you are going to take a bath in it!! Lavender,Roman Chamomile Rose Absolute or heavier oils like Patchouli and Sandalwood are great oils to blend in Epsom Salt for a calming and relaxing bath.

Have you tried Epsom Salt? We want to hear from you today!

Arthritis

20170904_140314

I was asked to speak at our local Arthritis support group! The facilitator was telling me that the group has embraced finding alternative methods of treatment for their arthritis, I think that is fantastic!

Did you know that there are over 100 forms of arthritis? And aside from the pain of it, there are a host of other issues most people who have arthritis deal with. Depression and insomnia and grief are just a few.

Medicinenet.com  wrote a helpful article on the subject and here is a bit of what they say about arthritis symptoms;

Arthritis Symptoms

Joint pain can be caused by injury affecting any of the ligaments, bursae, or tendons surrounding the joint. Injury can also affect the ligaments, cartilage, and bones within the joint. Pain is also a feature of joint inflammation (arthritis, such as rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis) and infection, and extremely rarely it can be a cause of cancer of the joint.

Symptoms and signs associated with joint pain can include

  • joint redness,
  • joint swelling,
  • joint tenderness,
  • joint warmth,
  • limping,
  • locking of the joint,
  • loss of range of motion of the joint,
  • stiffness,
  • weakness.

There is good news! Of course there is no silver bullet, but there are a lot of life style adjustments that can be made to help support the different facets of this debilitating disease and aromatherapy can definitely help.

There is the matter of the pain. Honest Aromas has created a blend that has been very helpful to people who deal with arthritis. We have picked some “heavy hitters” as far as essential oils go, such as; Clove (which is diluted well as it can be irritating to skin because of it’s high Phenol content)It is pain relieving and warming to sore joints and muscles. Birch, Helps support the uncomfortable parts of getting older such as tired limbs and joints. and Cinnamon leaf (Not Cinnamon Bark which irritates the skin);Cinnamon Leaf is numbing, warming, and anti-infectious. . They are extremely potent and have long lasting analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects. We have blended those into an Arnica infused oil for added muscle- pain relief and they all are blended in an easily absorbable unscented lotion. We have many customers who benefit from this particular blend and it is one of our most popular. (Essential Oil information taken from Pompeii Organics and Eden’s Gardens.)

Arthritis sufferers, like we said, deal with a myriad of other symptoms such as, insomnia. Essential oils like Lavender and Roman Chamomile can be very supportive in the relaxation of the nervous system and we make blends for this issue as well.

Stress, anger, and grief are all very real manifestations of arthritis. Bergamot can be a very helpful essential oil for it’s mood lifting and calming properties.

Diet changes have also shown significant help to cut down in inflammation that occurs with arthritis and the Keto Diet has been helping a lot of people, including 2 friends of mine, by reducing inflammation and pain and getting them back into the daily routines they nearly lost.

Arthritis can be a life-altering issue and I have seen the effects of it first hand after taking care of my mother-in-law, who had RA, for four years. The loss of mobility was hopeless for her. She pushed herself to get into the shower to get some warm water on her joints and she did some arthritis pool classes that would help her mobility and depression- but it wasn’t easy. I noticed it was very easy for her to become isolated and that of course is the worse thing for any of us to do. I also noticed that there were some medications that seemed to help her and some that seemed to make matters worse. I encourage you to be aware of your body and how you are feeling, and make the best choices you can to make your life it’s fullest. There is a lot of support out there, like this local group I am going to speak at. There are others who understand what you are dealing with and who have been helped by alternative methods that your physician is unaware of. Gather information, seek help from more than one source, you have a lot of life to live and give! We want to encourage you on your journey<3

“O-O-O”

Hello everyone! Hannah here. Today’s post is about the essential oil that scarred me for life: Oregano (Origanum vulgare).

I say this a little tongue in cheek, but it’s a little true too. When my siblings and I were little, Mom (Julia), in an effort to do the best for our health, would put oil of oregano in our orange juice, and then proceed to pretend it was normal.

Little six-year-old me would look at the oily film over the surface of my juice and refuse to drink it. I knew what she’d done, and I knew that oily, pizza-smelling orange juice wasn’t normal.

But oregano’s health benefits overruled my palate, and Mom made me drink the pungent juice every morning. I grew to hate oil of oregano, so much that I hated to even hear the name. I insisted that everyone refer to it as “o-o-o” in my presence.

One day I gagged while trying to force my orange juice down. After that Mom never made me drink it again, and my thought was “wow, I should’ve started gagging a lot sooner!” I was a devious little thing.

Now we joke about it with Mom, who is a little embarrassed that she made her children take such a strong oil internally! Knowing what she does now, she does not recommend ingesting oils, with a small exception (which I’ll get to later).

Humorous childhood stories aside, there are many health benefits to oregano. According to Pompeii Organics’ information on the essential oil, oregano is a disinfectant, antiviral and antibacterial, making it helpful for wounds.

It’s also an effective pain reliever, warming and numbing to the skin. It’s great to stimulate the digestive system and boost the immune system.

This last property is why Mom sneaked oregano into our orange juice all those years ago – in her defense, we never got sick! Of course, given the chance she’d do it a bit differently.

Ingestion of essential oils can be extremely dangerous for children. Many in the field of aromatherapy advise against it for adults, too, and here is where Mom (as an aromatherapist) will make a small exception. She’s found that for herself, ingesting a few drops of oregano essential oil in a capsule can totally eradicate the first signs of cold or flu. Any time sickness is going around and she starts to feel off, she takes a capsule and is back to normal in no time.

Of course, it’s important to do your research and find what will work best for you. If you are sensitive or have an allergy to oregano, this will most likely not work! This is where a consultation with an aromatherapist (I know a great one ;)) can help: she can get an overview of your health and tailor a remedy to fit your particular needs!

Have you ever tried “o-o-o”? Do you have ever tried it in orange juice? (don’t, it’s disgusting 🙂 ) Happy weekend to you all!

In A Storm

hurricane

With all of the hurricanes that have been hitting the US lately, and as I consider how frightening these times can be for people who are hit the hardest, I have been thinking about the storms I have weathered.

When you are in a storm of this magnitude, you have to keep your head about you and stay focused or you literally could be swept away. I remember a particular time when the circumstances of my life were in such a complete mess and the fall out from it was creating a storm, of such proportion, that I could have become completely emotionally impaired. My husband, George, had been speaking with a person whom we always respected and cared about very deeply, but the man was creating such waves out of his own fears, that my husband and I nearly drown in them.

One particular day, my husband was relaying a conversation to me that he had with this man earlier in the day. My husband was tired and distraught and so was I. As George was speaking, I started to feel that I was actually getting slapped by one enormous wave after another. With every question and accusation the man had posed to him from their earlier conversation, George’s voice actually started to fade into the background even though he was standing right in front of me. Next, my eyes started to glaze and I felt as if the pressure was starting to pull me under the water and I was literally starting to gasp with no strength to resurface. Right at that point, I heard the voice of Jesus clear as a bell; “JULIA!, Look at ME, listen to ME, follow ME!  I actually looked up to where I thought the voice was coming from. The roaring waves immediately turned into serene, foamy, level water! I came to my senses and with a clarity I had not known until that very point and I was able to be in complete peace and not be anxious. The storm, although I was still in it, was completely calmed as I looked to Jesus. It was truly amazing!

Jesus had done something very similar many, many years before with a man named Peter. Peter was a fisher man. He knew in his head that a man cannot walk on water. But one day when he saw Jesus walking on the water and he asked if he could do it! Jesus told him to come, and he actually did walk on water for a bit, but then it says in Matthew 14:30; “but when he (Peter) saw that the wind was boisterous, he was afraid and began to sink and cried out, saying, “Lord save me!”

It is natural to be afraid when the storms come whether they be natural or figurative. It goes against our natural inclinations to have faith and hold on to an anchor in the midst of a storm, but that is exactly what we must do. The heroic stories coming from the news tell of just such things during these natural disasters and have the theme of focus and faith all through them. We have to choose not to be afraid and place our grasp firmly on the anchor that will never let us be swept away in a storm.
