Sweet Cypress

Hello all! Hope your week is going well!

Today I want to take a look at an oil I love to use in my proprietary blends: Cypress!

According to Pompeii Organics, cypress has strong astringent and diuretic properties. This makes it useful for skin issues, especially puffiness, swelling, oily skin, and varicose veins.

Cypress can also help with colds and flu. It decongests, fights inflammation, and soothes muscle spasms.

People have used cypress for restless leg syndrome, cramps, and swollen feet. It’s great to calm your muscles and skin!

Hold That Thought…..

The other day, I was in the middle of a discussion with my teenage daughter when I had to interrupt the conversation with a “hold that thought”. She put her pinched fingers up in the air and said, “ok, I’m holding that thought!” A few seconds later she spotted some chocolate on the counter that I had just purchased. As her eyes grew wide, she continued…”but I put it (the thought) down for the chocolate!”

Oh, we laughed-Which is good medicine! A girl after my own heart!! A lover of chocolate and a little squirrel like in her attention!!

There are a lot of different oil blend ideas out there for focus and clarity and it is good investigate what works best for your specific needs, but many times the Essential Oil that is the stand out in these blends is ….Vetiver.  We use Vetiver in our ADHD Blend!

Do not use Vetiver in your electric diffuser, as it will most likely clog it. It is extremely thick. It is balsamic, woody and sensual, it is a base note, so it has a long lasting effect when you put it in a blend. It’s therapeutic properties according to Aromatic Wisdom Institute are that Vetiver is anti-fungal, Central Nervous System sedating, cooling, grounding, stimulating to immune function, skin healing and vitality restorer. Like Patchouli, this is a fragrance you either love or hate- so check it out first before you purchase.

Emotionally, the oil tends to help one connect to self and others, grounding and protecting them, sedative and restorative…a great oil for the purpose of attention! So, hold that thought a little longer and stay in the now with Vetiver!!;-)

Geranium (Pelargonium roseum) essential oil is something we sold out of at the Zelienople festival! This is an amazing oil with a ton of helpful properties.

According to Pompeii Organics, geranium is amazing for the skin. It’s an astringent and it also heals and rebuilds cells! It soothes inflammation and fights bacteria and fungus. It’s cooling to the skin; we recommend it to a lot of clients who deal with hot flashes.

Geranium is also used as an insect repellent. You can mix ten drops of it per ounce of lotion and apply before going out.

Not Just a Pretty Smell

One of the most common reactions we receive when we are out and about promoting our products is skepticism. Often when people see our little bottles and hear our claims, they laugh and shake their heads.

“Ah, yeah, the ‘elixir of life,'” they’ll roll their eyes.

Or, “how can a smell do all that?”

It’s understandable for there to be a little cynicism. Because essential oils are a bit of a fad right now, and because there isn’t a huge medical professional following, a lot of people tend to think that aromatherapy is in the realm of amateurs and quacks. Even people who believe EO’s are beneficial can tend to think that it’s the smell alone that helps. Of course, a little research proves both of these viewpoints quite wrong.

Aromatherapy is extremely scientific, and if studied and practiced correctly it can be enormously beneficial. It’s important to remember that plants have been around a lot longer than modern medicine. Plant medicine makes a wonderful first resort and complement that a lot of modern remedies are merely designed to mimic.

The first step in seeing essential oils correctly is to think of them not just as smells but as substances composed of natural chemicals. When we think of the word “chemicals” we can tend to make bad connotations. But chemicals are natural too! It’s the man-made ones that can hurt our bodies. Essential oils, being from plants, have natural chemicals from those plants. The chemical makeup also creates a smell, which is what we notice about the oils.

When you breathe in a scent, the smell travels up your nose to the thousands of receptors that connect your sense of smell to your brain. Your limbic system – the parts of the brain that respond to smell – then sends messages to the rest of your brain, affecting emotions, memories, thoughts, and behavior depending on the parts of the limbic system that are stimulated, which depends on which receptors responded, which depends on the smell. This is why they say smell is one of the most powerful senses – it can bring back childhood memories and emotions that otherwise lay dormant. (Source)

This is all a pretty simplified overview of olfactory and limbic processes. But you can see how even a little bit of research opens up a whole new world in aromatherapy! Maybe you’re a skeptic, or maybe you love essential oils but haven’t learned in depth why they’re so great. Hopefully this information whets your appetite to learn more. I was astounded when I went to school at the Aromatic Wisdom Institute. It was amazing to learn the mechanics of why aromatherapy is so effective. I hope you’ve learned at least a bit as well!

If you ever have any questions, send me an email! I love sharing information. That’s why I’m here!

Hey everyone!

Before Wednesday is over we’d like to share an ancient and amazing oil with you: Frankincense!

We’ve covered myrrh on the blog before, but never its famous partner, frankincense, which has also been used for thousands of years. Frankincense’s scent is earthy and spicy, like well, incense.

Of course, frankincense (Boswellia carteri) essential oil is not just a pretty smell; it has wonderful healing properties as well! (Source)

Frankincense fights pain and inflammation. It helps regenerate skin cells, making it great for scars. With its mucous-ridding and bacteria-killing properties, it’s helpful for treating colds and clearing respiratory passages. It also strengthens the immune system.

Not Christmas Yet

Don’t you hate how Christmas pops up in stores before its proper time? Us too, but we can’t resist telling you about a very Christmassy oil: Scotch Pine (Pinus sylvestrus)!

Pine isn’t just a nice smell at Christmas; it’s also an amazing health and cleaning ingredient. According to Pompeii Organics, pine helps decongest and soothe respirator passages, making it great for cold and flu season. It is very effective as a steam inhalation to clean out sinuses and kill germs!

Pine is a warming oil, meaning it helps with stiff and sore muscles and joints by increasing circulation. It fights inflammation and spasms.

Pine essential oil is also used in green cleaners. Visit Pompeii to find a recipe!

Thank you do everyone who supported us at the Zelienople Harmony Country Fall Festival! We had a lot of fun and loved connected with you all.

Interested in trying pine? Let us know by email or give us a call. You can order through us and save money! You don’t need to wait for Christmas to try it 🙂

Festival Follow-up with a side of suffering…

I changed the name of this post 3 times!! It sounded, as it still may….like such a downer.20151010_161018

I am a little down today actually. I should not be. I have a great life and the gift of eternal life, I am not ill, I have a husband who loves me and beautiful children. I have a cozy home, warm blankies on these cold evenings, and too many wonderful friends; did I just say toooo many wonderful friends?!! I just do not know why I get to be so blessed with so many amazing people in my life. I am truly grateful.

So, the festival went stupendously! We did really well and met a lot of fascinating people. We made a lot of contacts and we trust, repeat customers. I ran out of an allergy product while we were there, which is the first time that ever happened. So business is on the rise.

That is the typical follow up you would receive from me after such an event! The underlying” essence “of this particular festival (pun intended!!) was that there were so many people suffering with some thing far out of their control. Their stories challenge and sadden me.  I almost ran out of our ADHD blend because this, as well as other Autistic Spectrum Disorders are too common. It isn’t that I have a magic cure of course, but as parents, we are always looking for something to help. So in that process of parents picking out product for their children or a friend or who ever, a conversation would ensue.

There were also a lot of people with Fibromyalgia. I have had times of severe pain, and times I even thought I was going to have to endure that pain the rest of my life…but it would eventually let up and go. I have empathy for people who have to do this day in and out. Many of them have fantastic attitudes- which is so inspiring!

Then there were all the Migraine and Headache people! OH MY GOODNESS! I do make two products for this, because I was able to help some one who suffers with migraines. She has continued to buy the product- so I created two with some one like her in mind. Our migraine inhaler is one of our biggest sellers. I am happy to offer some thing that works ,that is not medicine to these folks….I just can’t believe how many of them there are.

Then there are the Depression and Anxiety group. I also offer 3 products in this area, as I deal with it my self. I named my blend “Happy Julia”!! But sell it for Honest Aromas under a different name;-) Depression is a different form of suffering. One that you can’t always feel or see, but is most certainly there- and many people deal with it daily.

So, do you see why I named it “with a side of suffering”? While I was at the festival, my brother called me from Tennessee. He wanted to remind me that in Revelation 21 :4 it says;” there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.” He reminded me that in this world there will be pain and suffering, but if we put our hope in Jesus Christ we will NEVER AGAIN experience these things, because they do not exist there! That is great news!! I needed to hear that, and wanted to share it’s truth with all of you.

At the beginning of this blog I started listing the things I was grateful for. That is a great way to literally reroute negative path ways in the brain and renew your mind. I have a friend who always reminds me to think on what is true, lovely, pure and of good report. I think I am going to spend the rest of the day doing that and enjoy this beautiful day I have been given a chance to live in…will you join me?<320151010_12504420151010_12504420151010_172907I really would love to hear from you!
