St. John’s Wort

Hello friends! Today I want to share about a very special herb: St. John’s Wort (Hypericum perforatum). According to Penelope Ody’s book Home Herbal, St. John’s Wort has been used for hundreds or years to treat inflammation and wounds, applications we still use it for today.

St. John’s Wort is anti-inflammatory and good for burns and joints. One major benefit of the herb is its usefulness in helping with depression. According to the Mayo Clinic.org,

Studies have shown St. John’s wort may be equally effective as tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs) and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressants for mild to moderate depression.

Essential oils are made from St. John’s Wort, but the herb is most often used for infused oils, which can be used by themselves or as carrier oils.

In fact, St. John’s Wort is a major ingredient in the Trauma Trio triple infused oil sold by The Herbal Guy (find it here). I love to use it for comforting and healing oil blends.

So I hope this has piqued your interest in this sunny little flower! Have you ever used St. John’s Wort? What do you think? We’d love to hear from you!
